Default Chronic Iron Deficiency Anemia

I have had chronic iron deficiency anemia since birth. My hemoglobin has dropped as low as a three (normal for a woman is between a 11-13) and usually need regular blood transfusions. This time though my hematologist did a 4 hour iron infusion. Anyone had one of these? It was not pleasant.

So is there a reason why you have this problem? Could it not be corrected through diet or through iron supplements? I just have never heard of a chronic iron deficiency. Do you have some sort of liver problem? I am very sorry to hear what you are going through. I wish there was something that I could do.

I was actually diagnosed with a condition called Cowden's Disease or Multiple Harmatoma syndrome which is a mutation of the P10 gene. I have had a host of problems since birth (including cancer 4X) one of them being chronic bleeding. I had exploratory surgery and they could never locate the cause of the bleeding. I have lost three quarters of my stomach so I am unable to digest or absorb iron supplements, hence the transfusions and iron through IV.

Thanks!

Julianna~

Iron deficiency anemia is the most common form of anemia. It occurs slowly when the normal stores of iron are quite low in the body. To produce red blood cells, the body needs, iron, folic acid and vitamin B12. If there is a lack of one or more of these things, anemia will evolve. It must be remembered that anemia is the last result of chronic iron deficiency.
