Default How long does it take for damaged nerves to heal?

A friend of mine was involved in a bad car accident. He got some metal plates and screws put in his hips and legs, and can now walk. However, he has had no sensation on some of his toes.

His doctor said that some of the nerves may be have damaged during the traumatic incident, and may take time to heal. They did a conductivity test where they placed an electrode on one end of the nerves in question to verify that the electrical signal is received at the nerve endings on his toes. The test passed, which shows that the nerves are not cut.
However, it's been a year and he still does not have any feelings on some of his toes. I was advising him to make an appointment to see a doctor since it has been over a year. But he tells me that the doctor said it would take some time, so he wants to allow more time.

Is it a year plenty of time to allow nerves to heal or am I missing something?

I got into my first car accident a few years ago and suffered a neck injury. I did the nerve conductivity test too. That was thee most uncomfortable test I ever had! They found I had some nerve damage, but nothing severe. It sounds like your friend does have nerve damage if he can not feel his toes sometimes. If I were him, I would have a talk with my doctor and see about having another nerve conductivity test done.
