Default To Supplement or Not to Supplement

"I try to eat clean; natural, organic and stay healthy. Why do I need supplements?" There is nothing wrong with this statement. In fact this is how all of us should be living... except for a few stark realities of the modern world.

Define clean: does it mean physically clean? Or untainted by dangerous chemicals? Certainly in both cases we have no assurances.

Define natural: plant based food straight from pristine soils? Or animal based food caught from the unspoiled wild? Again we know the answer to that.

Define organic: food grown, cultured or reared in a manner mimicking nature. Without doubt such food is available in the market but how about the cost? Can everyone afford? Even organic food has to be stored and transported. Can quality be assured?

The Case against Supplements

1. Many supplements are nothing more than synthetic forms with low bioavailability and assimilation.

2. Many components in supplements are not proven by science to be effective.

3. Most supplements are not independently verifed by third parties for composition or eficacy.

4. Most supplement companies outsource their manufacturing. Therefore quality assurance cannot be guaranteed by such companies.

5. Dosage is not standardised.

The Case for Supplements

1. Many supplements are real food and herbal extracts with high degree of bioavailability and assimilation.

2. The right kind of supplements can correct dietary deficiencies, imbalances and conduct repairs at the cellular level. There is considerable scientific evidence to back up the claims.

3. Some companies have their products verified by independent third parties.

4. Some companies manufacture all their supplements. Quality assurance is guaranteed at every stage of production.

5. Certain nutrients need no dosages while dosages for others are always specified by authentic companies.

The above list is certainly not exhaustive. But what it boils down to is that "not all supplements are created equal". Firstly, it depends on the authenticity and integrity of the manufacturing company. Secondly supplements are formulated and targeted towards specific health isssues and needs. So one size does not fit all. These two points are really crucial when one makes a decision to supplement.

Pointers if you decide to supplement

1. Beware of Snake Oil sellers. It is a challenge to identify them. But a few give away points are they try too hard to convince you and make almost miraculous claims about their products.

2. Be skeptical. Question everything. Supplement companies owe you answers when you the customer have queries. So contact them.

3. Investigate the background of the supplement company you are buying from. Are they registered with the authorities? Are they transparent about their business? Are they willing to enlighten you about the ingredients and the manufacturing process? Who are their scientific personel involved in the formulation of their products? What scientific proof is available for the function of the ingredients included in a formula?

I don't have anything constructive to contribute, but I just wanted to say this is extremely informative
