Computer's effects on eyes
Does anyone else think their vision gets worse after being on a computer all day? Can looking at the monitor constantly, and over a period of time affect your vision? I also get headaches from squinting looking at the computer. (I know I should probably put the computer down)

I am on the computer...too much! Every year I go to the eye doc I find my eyesight has gotten worse. I didn't have to wear glasses and I had perfect eyesight until I started doing computer work years back. I asked the doc what I can do to stop this. He told me to take frequent breaks from the computer and that should help. I just recently started but I do notice a relief when I walk away from the computer for a while.

While computers have no known harmful effects on eyesight, computer users do often
complain of eye related symptoms such as eyestrain, headaches, fatigue, dry eyes, and
difficulty focusing, These symptoms (Computer Vision Syndrome - CVS) however are caused not by the computer screen itself but rather by the conditions surrounding the computer screen, such as poor lighting or improper placement of computer equipment
and computer furniture. In some instances, a pre-existing eye problem may be the cause.
So Give Proper Lighting Near screen and rest periodically like close your eyes for five min and roll them and then wash with clod water.. it is good if you use rose water dailly after work..i do...
at last you can go for check ups...

Very good advice! You don't realize how much strain you put on your eyes until things start going wrong with them. I have never heard of rose water-I may just have to give that a try. I have been using otc eyedrops to help when my eyes feel strained and dry from looking at the computer screen. That along with taking Flaxseed/Omegas 3's--seems to be helping a little. Although I recently started not too long ago, so I guess it is too early to tell.

Computers are in our homes, at our work, whether they are used as a necessity or for entertainment they are simply everywhere. This is not a bad thing but consistent use of a computer can come with undesired side effects, namely eye strain. The eye is like a muscle and like any other type of muscle in the body it needs resting, also when you stare at your monitor you blink less often which can contribute to eye strain.I know only too well the pain that can be encountered when your eyes simply need a rest from the strains of looking at a monitor for hours and hours everyday. There are a few steps you can take to prevent eye strain:
1. Get your eyes examined by an optician
2. Make sure your computer environment is well illuminated
3. Reduce glare on your monitor
4. Posture and Workplace Ergonomics
5. Your monitor
6. Take regular breaks

I've actually read that it does strain the eyes. But being on the computer a lot for various reasons, I haven't seen a difference in my eyes. I've never needed glasses and hope I never will!
Perhaps a certain kind of screen saver can assist with that, what do you think?

The advice given here has been wonderful and very helpful--and I am sure it will help many of us who suffer from eye strain. I know I suffer from it on a daily basis and it is very bothersome. I know I will be hitting the natural food stores this weekend to get some "Rosewater" as well. Thanks again for all the great advice!

Hi,
Wow. What helpful advice. Love the Rosewater suggestion. Gonna get it this week. I've noticed the same things to my eyes as well.. Dryness, strain and even. headaches towards the evening. I do wear glasses but only for distance and not for the comp/reading and hope that I wouldn't have to :-)
Thanks for sharing these.
