Default Gasping for air at night

I wasn't sure where to ask this question so I'm asking here.
I've noticed that I sometimes wake up at night gasping to breath. I almost feel like I stopped breathing for a few seconds.
Has anybody heard of this before? Do you know what is causing it? Is there something I can do about it? I have braces so maybe that's causing it???? I don't know but it scares the heck out of me.

I don't have braces and it happens to me also.
I thought I was 'alone'. lol

It is scary and I don't know what causes it.Mine almost seems like someone
is choking me.It will happen even if I'm on my side.So I don't know.I wish I could tell you. When it happens to me it will send me into a panic attack which makes it worse.

I hope someone here can tell us what is causing it to happen.
