Default How to stop biting your nails?

Does anyone have tips on how to stop biting your nails?
My daughter has the bad habit of biting her nails and the skin around her nails to the point of bleeding.
I am looking for tips on how to help her stop this unhealthy habit.

As we all know, chewing on nails invite the infection to our bodies, it's easy to make young children stop bitting their nails by simply educating them, grown ups are a bit harder to talk to.
  • 1st, make sure your child is eating enough magnesium and calcium so that nails stays health and get repaired fast.
  • 2nd You can also distract the mouth by have a chewing gum and your hand with something, keep both busy.
  • 3rd cover nails with something "band aid" for couple hours / day so you can protect them.
  • 4th put some bad tasting gloss incase you don't want to band aid them.
Hope this helps

Hello Friends.......

#Purchase a bitter-tasting formula made expressly to stop nail biting. Choose the worst-tasting solution you can find.

#Wash hands every morning with soap and water and towel dry.

#Apply a liberal amount of the solution to the nails, cuticles and surrounding skin.

#Continue to reapply the solution throughout the day as it wears off.

#Reapply the solution at bedtime. Make sure the bitter taste is always present on your nails.

Thanks

Hello Friends.........

You can apply a disgusting nail biting cream like Control it.which you paint onto your nails. It tastes so bitter you won’t dare bite them.

Thanks

Not to be negative but I have been a nail biter since a kid. Still make them bleed on occasion. When I was a kid, about 6, my mom tried that nail paint... it's not all that bad when you know you get to bite your nails once you can stand it. Also, I've never had an infection due to biting, and I feel it has strengthened my immune system, exposing myself to small amounts of bacteria and viruses. <-probably not a good rule to go by. it's very hard to stop, the longest i've gone without biting was about 3 months, when I was 21, and even then I was using my teeth to dig crud out from underneath the new found white part. I would say that #2 of Simo_ohio's post is the best bet. Idle hands...

My daughter had artificial nails done for a few months. This got her out of the habit of chewing on her nails, and allowed them to grow beautifully.

Hi debby,
My friend advised me to put rubber band around my wrist and when someone found me biting nails, they pulled the rubber band. Though it was painful but it was effective.
Not sure whether you will adopt this procedure for your daughter or not as it is a bit painful.

If you want to stop biting, it helps to figure out why you do it in the first place. Common reasons include:

Old habit. Many SharpMen can trace their nail-chomping back to their shy and self-conscious teenage years. Now the process has become second nature and they do it without thinking.

Stress. Tension is one of the leading reasons people begin — and continue — to bite their nails. Biting and picking become automatic reaction to the stress of a challenging job or a worrisome problem.

Nervousness. It is not uncommon for a SharpMan to resort to nail biting when he is feeling nervous before that big meeting or on the way to that hot date. It can have the same psychologically soothing effect as smoking or overeating.

Post-smoking habit. Those who give up smoking often replace that habit with nail biting — it’s something to do with the hands that would have been occupied by a cigarette.

Habit triggered by another activity. Often nail biting will be associated with an activity such as talking on the phone or watching TV. Some people bite their nails when bored or unoccupied, e.g. sitting on the train or in the doctor's office.
