Default How much is too much to pay for health insurance?

I have always had health insurance but went without it last year when I could no longer afford the premiums. Open enrollment came up again but my mouth dropped once I seen the prices. Everyone says I am crazy if I don't get health insurance for the family, but paying over half my paycheck every week to health insurance premiums for the cheapest HMO just seems crazy to me.

I am wondering if anyone else is in a similar predicament as I am. I know private health insurance is hard to get--my husband and I can't get it on our own because of our weight right now. However, it just seems crazy to pay so much for health insurance costs. Do I have the wrong thinking on this?

We have health insurance through our employer. Even though the what we're paying is smaller compared to what others are paying, it still is a chunk of our paycheck.
I was doing some research recently on supplemental coverage and really didn't find much other than the private plans you mentioned, which is not cost effective since we only wanted a supplemental coverage. But I did find what is called "discount health plans". This might be something worth looking into if you can't qualify for any regular health coverage. It's not insurance, but it can help and it's not too expensive.

@ Michelle, it depends on the insurance plan you bought. cause an insurance plan has a different number in which you wanted to buy.
