Default Tests show many vitamin supplements contain contaminants

Interesting article about how a lot of vitamin supplements contain contaminants that are actually harmful to your health. Vitamin supplements takers, be warned!
Lead in ginkgo pills. Arsenic in herbals. Bugs in a baby's colic and teething syrup. Toxic metals and parasites are part of nature, and all of these have been found in "natural" products and dietary supplements in recent years.

Set aside the issue of whether vitamin and herbal supplements do any good.

Are they safe? Is what's on the label really what's in the bottle? Tests by researchers and private labs suggest the answer sometimes is no.

The Yahoo article can't be found any more, but great topic.

I think I would try to only take the supplements that are recommended and from reputable companies. I like to research any prescription drug I put in my body so I think I’d do the same if not more for something that may or may not be regulated.

I’ve narrowed my list of necessities down to a multi-vitamin, Omega 3 supplement and a resveratrol (mostly because Dr. Oz claims that if you aren’t getting the potency of it from red wine, a supplement is a good source for it).

I rarely take supplements. I don’t think they’re needed! Your vitamins and nutrition should come from your diet. Unless your body isn’t absorbing it for some reason or you cannot find foods rich in the vitamin you need, then use supplements. Otherwise, skip them and use them in your food instead!

I agree with esper (as usual), supplements are not needed. The human body can get everything it needs from a proper diet.

That is really scary though to think that those things can be found in things that so many people take and believe that are helping them. I wonder if they help because the person “believes” it is helping.

This is a crucial heads-up for everyone planning to take supplements. Be sure that what you purchase is safe and proven to be effective without side effects and contaminants. That's the risk you can take if you're not aware of the supplements and drugs you take in. Some products are fake and it can't be noticed by consumers easily. Consult your physician or someone who has knowledge about these drugs.

I completely agree! Be sure to know how soluable the supplement is because most vitamins today crystallize during digestion meaning you are still not getting the right amount of nutrients.

The very best vitamin supplement you can take is powered by oligo, you can even try it for 90 days and if you are not feeling overall better you get your money back no questions asked. I take oligo and I saw a difference after just a few days!!!

Studies have shown and FDA recommends that every man, woman, and child take a daily multivitamin because we do not get the right amount of nutrients from the food we eat.

Truly Essential Nutrition
You need vitamins and minerals to live, and you have to get them from your diet.
The most common, natural source of vitamins and minerals is fruits and vegetables, but according to a 2009 report from the Centers for Disease Control, only 14% of U.S. adults and less than 10% of U.S. teens are eating the recommended minimum of two daily servings of fruit and at least three daily servings of vegetables.1 Sobering facts like these have prompted doctors to recommend that all adults take a daily multivitamin.2

Amounts Do Matter
Taking vitamins more than once a day ensures a constant source of vital nutrition.
As humans, we are designed to eat several times a day. So it only makes sense that we need to supplement that often. Supplementing the diet with the Vitality Pack twice daily helps provide the ideal amounts of vitamins and minerals throughout the day.

This is especially true for vitamins. The body cannot store most vitamins, so they are only of benefit for a limited time. Taking a vitamin twice daily helps ensure your body is replenished with a constant supply to maintain optimal health.

Putting Long-term Benefits at Risk
You may not feel a difference when you skip, but the consequences are real.
Most vitamins and minerals provide more than one benefit to the body. Some maintain critical functions such as regulating your heart, while others maintain a strong immune system and help the body rejuvenate itself.* Your body has an incredible capacity to prioritize these benefits and allocate them, much like doctors prioritize patients in an emergency room.

In your body, vitamins and minerals are utilized first to maintain your critical life functions, and then–and only if there is enough–it will use them for rejuvenation, repair, and other more long-term benefits.* As a result, you may not feel a lot of difference if you skip a day or two, but over time, the deficiencies can add up. Many illnesses and diseases, such as osteoporosis, have a direct link to vitamin and mineral deficiencies.

Mom always said to eat your fruits and veggies, and Mom was right. Fruits and vegetables are some of the best natural sources for critical vitamins and minerals, but too few of us heed Mom’s advice.

In September of 2009, the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) reported that only 14% of adults and only 9.5% of adolescents eat the recommended amount of fruits and vegetables every day. That creates a huge nutritional gap. Fortunately, the Vitality Pack with Oligo can help close that gap.

The amounts of critical nutrients in the Vitality Pack go far beyond daily minimum requirements. It contains research- recommended amounts from the finest sources to help your body get more of the vitamins and minerals you need for optimal daily health.

Default Those scary, scary supplements

American journalism seems to thrive on stuff meant to scare us. The truth has nuances that journalists almost always overlook. The joke for those in this business is that if you create headlines that say "How your morning shower is killing you," you are guaranteed readers.

Yes, some supplements have been found to be adulterated, that is, stuff has been added that is not on the label. The most egregious offenders, according to the FDA, are weight loss supplements, sexual enhancement supplements and bodybuilder supplements, and the FDA has warned that they are going after these people with vigor.

HOWEVER, the bigger picture is this: In January, 2010, the U.S. National Poison Data System published a report saying that, in 2008, there was not a single report of someone being killed by vitamins, minerals, amino acids or herbal supplements, including such popular supplements as blue cohosh, echinacea, ginkgo biloba, ginseng, kava kava, St. John's wort, valerian, yohimbe, Asian medicines, ayurvedic medicines, creatine, blue-green algae, glucosamine, chondroitin, melatonin, or any homeopathic remedies. Not one. On the other hand, some 100,000 Americans die each year from taking FDA-approved pharmaceuticals!

When you see a politician (such as John McCain) grandstanding about supplements being unsafe and needing more regulation, just know that it is all about the politician getting noticed in the press, not about supplement safety. This almost always happens around the very popular scandals involving sports figures trying to push off the high levels of steroids in their blood to mistakenly taking over-the-counter supplements.

Due to the agricultural practices that have been propagated by agribusiness and government policy over the past 50 years, the nutritional content of our food has dropped severely. You will need to eat something like three times the spinach today to get the same amount of nutrients you got in a serving 50 years ago. Thus, supplements. You can read some of the studies on this at the Organic Trade Association web site.

Do you eat cold water fish every day? If not, you are most certainly deficient in omega-3s, something that can be adequately supplied by a krill-oil or fish-oil supplement. If you do eat that much fish, you are in danger of heavy metal contamination, whereas omega-3 supplements have the heavy metals refined out of them. You can read more about omega-3 supplements at WellWise.
