Default When you just 'know'...

My youngest daughter was different than her siblings at 4 months old. I told her doctor and he just kept putting me off and calling me a worrier. I finally had her evaluated by early intervention who noted that she was far behind her peers... it took 9 more months, calls from her physical therapist, and more pushing from me to get her into a geneticist who took one look at her and told me she had one of two diseases.

A week later is was confirmed which it was, and we were told she would begin regressing in the next year and would eventually die.

Thankfully, I did my research and found out that a treatment was available... (bone marrow transplant) and she is doing better now than anyone ever thought possible.

My point here is that if you feel like something is wrong and your doctor doesn't listen... keep pushing. Make them do the test. Make them take a second look. If I had just 'gone with the flow' it would have been too late for the transplant that saved her.

You can check out www(dot)LaurenD(dot)webs(dot)com if you want to see her picture.

Wow, what a story! I am so glad that you went with your motherly instincts and got that second evaluation! It frustrates me to no end sometimes when the doctor treats you like you are just worrying over nothing. I am sure it is different for them when it is their child!
This is a great motivation for mother’s every where to never take one doctor’s word for anything. Always push for your child and get a second opinion if needed.

If it wasn't for a mother's instinct there wouldn't be a lot of the discoveries in developmental difficulties and childhood diseases. We give the scientists something to research. I never understood why there wasn't a more intensive check-up for babies for maybe about a year, instead of the basic exams that babies are given in a Dr's office. When we are pregnant, we are asked to fill out an extensive medical history of both sides of the families and after that it just seems to go in the charts, never to be seen again.

Thank Goodness you pushed on and decided to take charge. It's amazing what the power of mommy can accomplish!
I am so glad you posted this. It's going to inspire a lot of moms to seek second, third, and fourth opinions.
