You're on the right track. Keep doing what you are doing. Make a game out of it and make a day a theme color day or ask the child to find you a colored object in the house and give him a reward for it.

Get construction paper, write the name of the color on it (this also helps them recognize the word to the color and helps them with reading later on.) and put it up on a wall in their bedroom.

Hope these suggestions help.

Definitely make a game out of it. There are children's board games such as Candyland that help teach colors. I know there's another popular board game but I can't think of the name right now. I always felt that playing games with my son was the best way to teach him.

Hi,
You've got some great suggestions there.. making a game always works with toddlers. I use colored rings and chalks to teach mine. Also, point out the color when you see it in a real situation. For instance, "look, a lovely gray bird" and so on. Hope this helps. I love the fruit idea though and will use it with my little one.

The best and proven way to get children familiar with colors are to associate those colors with things the child likes!

When my children were young, under a year old actually, my son LOVED fruit. So I would associate the color of each fruit with the name of the fruit. Here are some examples.

If your child loves grapes, buy green, purple and red grapes. Allow your child to be hands on. Have them choose a grape color, and then say to them, "oh you want a green grape"? Those are good! Continue this until your child can tell you what color the grape is when you ask. Also ask the child to go get you a green grape. See if he/she picks the right color.

Do this with each color until your child knows the color. I have found through my coaching and parenting, using items or food that your child really likes, is the best way to teach them colors, numbers and shapes! Both of my children could count to ten, knew all their numbers and could do their colors before they turned one.

It is all about repetitiveness! Do it until they get it!
