Default PCOS weight loss

Hi I have PCOS but I think it's more extreme than most experience. I have asthma too and the steroids caused lots of issues with my adrenals(they stopped working for a while) and contributes to insulin resistance.

I have a terrible time losing weight. Weight Watcher's doesn't work for me. Low carb does work, but it has to be super super strict (as in NO carbs for weight loss). I lost about 60lbs before I had DD (via IVF). Now I have a terrible time doing strict Low Carb while feeding a family--too much temptation!

And I can't take metformin, I have a bad reaction to it that could be life threatening.

Sooooo anyone have any ideas on anything I may not have tried yet? I went to an endocrinologist earlier this year to see about trying a different medication (now that I'm not TTC I can 'experiment' with other meds) but was met with vast ignorance and told 'people in concentration camps weren't fat, you're just eating too much'. (That is an exact quote and I swear if _I_ was in a concentration camp I would be the VERY last person to get skinny).

Until my insurance changes I don't have access to any decent specialists. I'm trying to find something livable where I can eat a pear or apple and still lose weight, you know?

V

Hi V,

You and I are in very similar situations. Good to see another "cyster" here. Gosh, I could write a book on my PCOS experiences, but it would probably bore everyone to death. lol

I too can not take metformin-in my case it made me extremely ill. I was on bc pills for so long that I started to have problems...couldn't take them anymore. I stopped taking meds years ago and basically have been dealing with all the symptoms since---all of them.

I now lack health insurance and am trying to get everything under control with diet and home remedies. I go on low cal diets, I don't lose anything. I also lose weight on low carbs diets but honestly, I am miserable when I do them. I am in the same position you are-it is hard! I now am starting to just watch what I eat and keep moving. I am not limiting myself too much-we'll see how it goes.

Don't you love how we get the-"lose weight and you will be fine" speeches? If we could-I am sure we would. Having PCOS and insulin resistance makes it uh, just a little bit hard to do.

I too am looking for answers. Hopefully we will get them soon.

I have found that an extremely low carb diet is the only thing that will work for me too—and that is hard for anyone to stay on for any length of time. I have found that once I am on the diet and losing weight, I am not tempted to cheat so much. But getting to that point is what is hard for me. Lots of exercise can help, and I do mean lots—it’s also hard to do!
I have used alpha lipoic acid supplements in place of metformen—it does work for me but I have to be careful to not make my blood sugar get too low from taking it. It’s best to find a good doctor that will work with you.

Hello Dayweaver!

I lost a lot of weight on Atkins and was miserable every single day I was on it. I then went on The South Beach diet and lost 30 pounds immediately. After the 30 pounds, that was it. I lost no more weight no matter what I did. Low carb diets make me miserable. I get headaches, I am irritable, and I always feel deprived. I eventually cave in because I cannot take it. I also started losing a lot of my hair and I swear it was from the low carb diets. So I am watching what I eat now and I am doing a lot of exercising and walking. I feel better and lighter, but it has only been a few weeks. I am buying a new scale this weekend so it will be interesting to see if I lost anything.

It is so hard to lose weight and keep up with it, especially with PCOS. When I had health insurance, I did not get the right help from my docs. Now that I am uninsured, I found a doctor not too far from me that specializes in PCOS! Of course, now that I have no insurance, I can’t see him. An office visit is not much; it is all the other “tests” that need to be done that is expensive.

I am going to try the alpha lipoic supplements you mentioned. Do you find it helps you out?

I tried Atkins too and it was the only thing that worked for me. Once I got into Ketosis, I was fine. The food became boring after awhile, but that was because I didn’t feel like cooking much. -- but I felt fine. Alpha lipoic acid helped me when I was doing Atkins. It helped me stay in ketosis even when I ate too many carbs.

Woo hoo! This past month, I have been watching what I eat and have lost about 10 pounds. OK, I know it is not a lot especially since I have sooo much more to lose. But, given I survived the holidays and a few family misfortunes recently--I think I did pretty well. Best part, I think eating right is starting to help my PCOS symptoms. I ovulated on my own for the first time--in about 1 year! To a girl like me who suffers from amenorrhea and PCOS-this is great news.

No carb counting, no calorie counting. I just added in more complex carbs, ate more fruits and veggies, took in less simple sugars and walked--although not as much as I need to. I am going to step it up a notch in that department though. I still didn't get the Alpha lipoic acid yet--I plan to add that in as well.

recommended diet for women with PCOS is a low glycemic diet. Also, it is helpful to get fit if you're a little overweight.
