Default What does it mean when your dog eats grass??

I've always been told that a dog who eats grass is sick. I always thought it caused them to vomit which soothes their tummies. Is that true?
Or do they just like the taste of grass? Or does it mean that they are missing something in their diet?

Dogs eat grass to settle their stomach. Depending on which type of grass they can get to, it will help them feel a lot better. Yes-you're right, sometimes they will get sick from it. This is because they will eat the 'right' kind to make them throw up. My dog did that when he ate something he shouldn't have.

I wonder how they know that they are suppose to eat grass to settle their stomach. I guess it could be innate.
I didn't know a certain type of grass helps. It's kinda like medicine for them. Strange. I had a dog who was always eating grass. I thought maybe he just liked the taste. Maybe he was sick the whole time. Poor little guy!

In the past my dog has eaten my house plants then she would vomit. I think its a way for dogs to eliminate unsettled foods in their body. Make sure there is no pesticide on the grass.

I believe in the wild the dog would eat meat that only received nutrients from plants that provide what the dog needs. So since most dog foods are made from grain and meat fed grain like corn the dog food is missing most or all of these nutrients. So the dogs instinct is to try to get it right from the plants especially if the dog has fallen ill. One main component of the plant may be nitrilosides as suggested by the author in the book "world without cancer" I write a lot about this in my blog called "Leon's Thought for Food"
