Low Carb Diets
Hi,
I have always been a big fan of Atkins since it helps me to jumpstart weight loss and now that am battling post pregnancy weight, am tempted to try it again. However, I've been reading that it can cause kidney problems, etc. Does anyone have any experience with Atkins, good or bad??
Thnx

There's a big problem with Atkins and other low carb diets. That much protien and fat will contribute to gout.
Gout is a very painful concentration of uric acid crystals in joints, mainly the knees and feet. You can fight gout by eating a lot of dark red cherries- sweetened if you want. But, you'll have to eat about a pound a day to cure the gout! Any diet that takes something completely out of the diet is bad. Humans are omnivores. While meat can be removed and replaced by other protein rich things...carbs shouldn't.
ONLY refined white breads and the like. NOT all carbs!

My husband tried it but he started getting sick. After he stopped the diet, he felt better.
I loosely follow the GI diet. You basically eat foods that make you feel fuller for longer. Because of it, I have switched to whole grain foods. I very rarely eat anything with white flour nowadays (I still eat a little of it..it's hard to quit cold turkey), and I have cut down on sugar.
I have been able to eat more (healthy food of course) and still stay thin. I don't recommend switching to fake sugar though. When I started the GI diet 2 years ago, I started using Splenda. BIG Mistake. Splenda causes bladder problems and boy did I have problems. I didn't realize Splenda was causing my overactive bladder until about a month or so ago. I quit splenda and I am feeling 100% better.
I don't consider the GI diet a diet. It's more of a lifestyle change and like I said before I follow it loosely and it's worked for me.

I can't deny the possible risks,but I love Atkins.
I stayed on induction for over two weeks and it works great.
I have heard all the cons, but for me,I feel so much better on a low carb then I do on a carb/low fat.And I lose more too.
Just as with us (I do any way) taking diet pills,or anything else, there are risks with our kidneys and liver ect.But so is it for us who drink beer or coffee...soooo IDK...Yes,there is probably a risk, but I love low carbs when I diet,I see results quicker when I jump start that way...

Hi,
Thanks for sharing this. I've heard the risks about gout as well. I think I'll go with induction starting this MOnday and then, decide if I wanna go past the two weeks or gradaully ease a few carbs back into my life. I guess an overdose of anything is not good for the body, so I'll follow the same prinicple with Atkins?? by the way, HealthyMOmma, is there a link/article on GI diets that I can take a look at?? It does sound like a good choice.

Low Carb Diets
Your body needs the macronutrients (protein, fats, carbs) at all times for your metabolism to function properly. A caloric surplus (eating more calories than you burn) causes weight gain. Find out what your basal metabolic rate is and set your daily calorie intake based on that. A caloric deficit will cause you to lose weight. Regular exercise will help you maintain a caloric deficit.

I personally love the Atkins diet. I know that it's not right for everyone, by for me personally it was a godsend. Weight just melts off my body on this diet and I know I can't be on it forever, but for the initial weight loss it was perfect.

I've tried some low carb diets, similar to atkins. I've also tried no carb diets. I personally feel sluggish when I decrease my carb intake.
Now all I do is when I decide to tone up for the summer, I cut carbs for a few weeks do lose waterweight, then I just make sure the carbs I eat are healthy carbs, and I watch my calorie intake. Lifting weights and doing cardio seems to be the real trick for me.

This site really helped me. I started on this system for its natural qualities and no hassles. I stay with it and now use other products they offer. I saved lots of money on meals, including coffee, and clothes that were starting to get borderline. The products are natural and you have personal advisors to help you.
