Default Facial Hair

This is an embarrassing topic but wonder if any are up for discussing the increase in facial hair as we age. I forgot to mention it at my last doctor’s appointment but it is an issue that is driving me crazy.

Is it solely a problem with hormones that can be corrected or should I consider a permanent removal solution other than the creams and hair removal tools that are on the market? If the former, is it cause for concern?

Thanks for any who can offer insight on this topic.

Excess facial hair can be a symptom of other conditions or hormone related. I was diagnosed with PCOS (poly cystic ovarian syndrome) which is also called metabolic syndrome or Syndrome X. During certain times of the month I will have a significant increase in the amount of facial hair. Some people respond well to hormone treatments (birth control pills or other) and some don't. You should definitely mention it to your doctor so they can consider it with any other symptoms you have.

There was a 2007 study that found 2 cups of spearmint tea (during the follicular phase of their cycles) helped some women. It reduces the "free" testosterone while leaving the total testosterone alone. In high "doses" mints can interfere with hormones but at 2 cups a day, that risk is thought to be negligible. Might be worth talking over with the doc. ;-)
